NSCA holders certified mid-cycle should also enter their certification start date so the tool can prorate the total requirement.

What Counts as a CEU?
Across all three major bodies, 1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU for most activities (workshops, seminars, online courses, live events). For NSCA college courses, 1 semester credit = 0.5 CEU; 1 quarter credit = 0.3 CEU. NSCA Category B (volunteer/presentation) and Category D (quizzes/self-study) have separate max caps. Always keep completion certificates; a random audit requires documentation within 30 days of selection.
Frequently Asked Questions
NASM-CPT holders must earn 2.0 CEUs (20 contact hours) every two years. This includes a mandatory 0.1 CEU from a current CPR/AED certification. Category A courses (NASM/AFAA-approved) are capped at a maximum of 1.9 CEUs. The recertification fee is $99. Late applications submitted up to 90 days post-expiry incur a $30 late fee; from 91 days to one year a $50 fee applies. Applications are accepted up to one year after expiry only if all CEUs were completed within 90 days of the expiry date.
ACE-CPT holders must complete 2.0 CEUs (20 hours) every two years, including 0.1 CEU from a valid CPR/AED certification. That leaves 1.9 CEUs to earn through ACE-approved courses, workshops, or other eligible activities. The base renewal fee is $129. ACE sends a reminder email 90 days before expiry. After 90 days of lapse, the certification expires completely and you cannot renew — you'd need to re-certify from scratch.
NSCA-certified professionals (CSCS, NSCA-CPT, CPSS, CSPS, TSAC-F) must complete 6.0 CEUs every three years on a synchronized calendar cycle (currently 2024–2026, deadline December 31, 2026). If you earned your certification during the current cycle, your requirement is prorated based on how much of the cycle remains. CEUs must come from at least two of the four categories (A–D). Importantly, CPR/AED certification is a hard requirement but does NOT count toward your 6.0 CEU total. The recertification fee is $50 for NSCA members, $75 for non-members.
For NASM, ACE, and NSCA live events: 1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU. So 2.0 CEUs requires 20 contact hours; 6.0 CEUs requires 60 contact hours. NSCA has exceptions for college courses: 1 semester credit hour = 0.5 CEU; 1 quarter credit hour = 0.3 CEU. Always verify the CEU value with the issuing provider before registering, as the credit awarded depends on the course format and whether it has been pre-approved.
It depends on the certifying body. For NASM and ACE, completing a CPR/AED certification earns 0.1 CEU that counts toward your 2.0 total. For NSCA, CPR/AED is a mandatory requirement for recertification but earns zero CEUs — it must simply be current (valid) at the time of renewal. NSCA First Aid (separate from CPR/AED) can earn CEUs in Category C. Always check whether your specific CPR/AED course qualifies (in-person or virtual skills check required by ACE; NASM now accepts online CPR since COVID, though policies may change).
For NASM: renewal applications can be accepted up to one year post-expiry if CEUs were completed within 90 days of expiry. A late fee applies. After one year, the credential typically lapses and you'd need to re-examine. For ACE: a 90-day late grace window exists; beyond that, the cert expires fully. For NSCA: the deadline is December 31 of the cycle end; if you lapse, reinstatement may be possible if your CEUs were maintained, but you'll need to contact NSCA directly. In all cases, having lapsed insurance and working without a valid cert can violate facility and insurance terms.
NSCA divides CEU activities into four categories: Category A — Live events (NSCA events and approved non-NSCA events); Category B — Volunteer work and educational presentations at NSCA conferences; Category C — First aid, college coursework, internships, additional certifications, and pre-approved online courses; Category D — NSCA quizzes, self-study materials. Each category has a maximum CEU cap, and you must earn CEUs from at least two different categories. CEUs beyond the per-category maximum do not count toward the total.
