Calculate how much storage space you need for your wardrobe
This tool helps you plan your closet organization by calculating how much storage space you need based on your actual wardrobe. Simply count your items in each category and enter the numbers. The calculator will tell you:
The calculator uses standard closet organization measurements:
Use these results to plan your closet renovation or organization system:
A standard hanging shirt or blouse requires approximately 2 inches of rod width and 45 inches of vertical height including the hanger. Bulkier items like winter coats may need 3-4 inches of rod space.
A single closet rod is typically installed at 66 inches from the floor. For double-hung closets, the top rod is at 80 inches and the bottom rod at 40 inches, allowing for shirts, jackets, and pants on separate levels.
Standard closet shelves are 12 inches deep, which fits most folded clothing, shoes, and storage boxes. Walk-in closets often use 14-16 inch deep shelves for added capacity.
On average, you can fit 3-4 pairs of adult shoes per linear foot of shelf space when placed side by side. Using angled shoe racks can increase this to 5-6 pairs per linear foot.
Both work well. Hanging jeans saves shelf space but uses valuable rod length. Folding them on shelves saves rod space for items that wrinkle easily. This calculator includes jeans as folded items but you can adjust based on your preference.
The average adult needs 6-8 feet of hanging rod space, 12-16 square feet of shelf space, and storage for 10-20 pairs of shoes. Active wardrobes or those in variable climates may need 50-100% more space.
A functional walk-in closet starts at approximately 6.5 feet × 6.5 feet (about 42 square feet). This allows for hanging space on two walls with 36 inches of clearance in the middle for comfortable movement.
Use vertical space with double-hang rods for shirts and pants. Add slim shelf dividers to stack folded items higher. Install hooks on doors and walls for bags and accessories. Store out-of-season items in bins on high shelves or under the bed.
