How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your age and gender. The tool immediately shows the correct WMA implement weights for your five-year age group and the WMA age factors for each event.
- Choose metres or feet/inches as your preferred unit (all inputs and results switch together).
- Type in your best throw (or competition mark) for each of the five events — shot put, discus, hammer, javelin, and weight throw.
- Press Calculate My Score. Instantly see your age-factored performance (AFP), IAAF combined-events points per event, and your total pentathlon score.
- Save, share, or export your scorecard using the buttons in the results panel.
You do not need to enter all five throws — leave events blank to score them as zero. This is useful when comparing partial results mid-competition.
What Is the Masters Throws Pentathlon?
The throws pentathlon (also called the weight pentathlon) is a masters track-and-field combined event comprising five throwing disciplines: shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, hammer throw, and weight throw. It is a full world championship event at the World Masters Athletics Championships and is contested at USATF and other national masters meets.
Athletes compete in five-year age groups from M/W 35–39 up through M/W 90+, with progressively lighter implements assigned at each age group to ensure fair, age-equitable competition. Each event is scored with the official IAAF combined-events formula (the same underlying math used in the decathlon and heptathlon), adjusted by WMA age factors that account for both the reduced implement weight and the natural effects of aging.
Implement Weights by Age Group (WMA Standard)
The following is a summary of WMA-mandated implement weights. The full official table is in WMA Appendix A. Women's implements are lighter across all age groups; within each gender, implements become progressively lighter at older age groups.
- Men 35–49: shot 7.26 kg, discus 2.0 kg, hammer 7.26 kg, javelin 800 g, weight 15.88 kg
- Men 50–54: shot 6.0 kg, discus 1.5 kg, hammer 6.0 kg, javelin 700 g, weight 11.34 kg

How Masters Scoring Works
Masters throws pentathlon scoring has two layers:
1. Age-Factored Performance (AFP)
Your actual throw in metres is multiplied by your WMA age factor: AFP = actual_distance × age_factor. The age factor is always ≥ 1.0 — it gives older athletes credit for throwing with lighter implements, effectively converting their mark to an open-class equivalent. Throws are rounded down to the nearer shorter centimetre before scoring.
2. IAAF Combined-Events Formula
The AFP is then entered into the standard IAAF combined-events field formula: P = A × (AFP − B) ^ C, where A, B, and C are fixed event-specific constants from the official IAAF Scoring Tables for Combined Events (2001 edition, still current). The result is truncated (not rounded) to the nearest whole point. Points from all five events are summed for your total pentathlon score.
The IAAF tables were designed so that a world-record-level open performance scores approximately 1,000–1,100 points per event. A solid masters thrower can realistically accumulate 2,500–4,500 points across all five events depending on age group and ability level.
WMA Age Factors Explained
WMA age factors are different for each event because performance declines at different rates. Hammer and shot put decline faster than javelin in older age groups. The 2023 update significantly revised the women's hammer and men's javelin factors to better reflect modern performance data. Always use the current WMA factors for official competition; this tool uses the 2023 WMA factors.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good total score in the masters throws pentathlon?
For masters throwers in the M50–M60 range, a total of 3,000 points represents solid regional competitive level; 3,800–4,200 points is national class; over 4,500 is world class. Scores vary widely by age group since lighter implements allow greater distances, but WMA age factors are designed to normalize this so top scores across age groups are broadly comparable.
How does the age factor handle lighter implements?
The WMA age factor is specifically calibrated to account for both the athlete's age and the reduced implement weight used in their age group. A 65-year-old man throwing a 5 kg shot put multiplied by his age factor produces an AFP equivalent to an open-class (7.26 kg) distance. This means you never apply a separate implement-weight correction — the age factor already contains it.
What is the difference between the throws pentathlon and ultra-weight pentathlon?
The throws pentathlon uses the standard five throwing implements: shot, discus, javelin, hammer, and weight throw. The ultra-weight pentathlon uses five progressively heavier implements (typically all thrown from a circle), usually contesting shot, discus, hammer, weight, and a super-heavy weight. Both events are contested at USATF masters championships. This calculator covers the standard throws pentathlon.
Is the throws pentathlon contested indoors?
The event is primarily an outdoor competition. Indoor versions are sometimes contested substituting the hammer with a weight throw due to facility limitations, but rules vary by meet. Always confirm with your meet director. The scoring formula is the same regardless of surface.
Can I use this calculator to check my competition result?
Yes — enter your best mark from each event, and the calculator computes your AFP and IAAF points using the same formulas and 2023 WMA age factors used by official scorers. Minor rounding differences may appear if the official scorer used the printed look-up table rather than the formula. For official results, refer to your meet's official scorer. This tool is for training, planning, and verification — not a substitute for official meet scoring.
What age groups are eligible for the throws pentathlon?
The throws pentathlon is primarily a masters event for athletes aged 35 and older, contested in five-year age groups (M/W 35–39, 40–44, …). USATF also recognises sub-masters (ages 30–34) using open implements. The event is open to all ability levels — many athletes compete purely for the personal challenge of the combined event format rather than for medals.
How do I know which age factor to use mid-year?
The WMA age factor for a competition is based on the athlete's age on the day of competition. This tool uses the age you enter — if you enter your exact age on competition day, the correct age group and factor will be applied automatically.
