Two valid methods. Different agreements.

A house costs the same to book even if someone arrives a day late. The question is whether your group shares the whole reservation in proportion to time stayed, or treats each night as its own expense. Neither formula can decide what your friends agreed to.

By nights stayed

Add up every guest’s nights, then allocate the accommodation total in that proportion. Someone staying three nights pays three times the accommodation share of someone staying one. It is a useful option when everyone agreed to book the house together.

Guest’s accommodation share = accommodation total × guest’s nights ÷ total guest-nights

Night by night

For each night, divide that night’s price among the people sleeping there. Add up those amounts for each guest. Guests staying on a quiet night cover that night themselves; later arrivals don’t contribute to it. Enter actual nightly prices if a weekend night costs more.

Guest’s accommodation share = sum of (nightly price ÷ guests present) for the nights they stay

Fees are allocated separately using your selected rule. All final shares are rounded to two decimal places, with leftover cents assigned to the largest fractional remainders. Ties follow guest order, so the shares always add up to the booking total.

Four friends, a three-night stay

Riley and Morgan stay Friday through Monday. Casey and Jordan arrive Saturday and leave Monday. Accommodation is 1,200, at 400 per night, plus a 120 cleaning fee shared equally.

GuestNightsBy nightsNightly
Riley3390.00430.00
Morgan3390.00430.00
Casey2270.00230.00
Jordan2270.00230.00
Total101,320.001,320.00

With the first method, 1,200 ÷ 10 guest-nights is 120 per guest-night. With the second, Friday costs Riley and Morgan 200 each; Saturday and Sunday cost everyone 100 each per night. Cleaning adds 30 per guest either way.

Handle the parts that aren’t equal

Cleaning, taxes, and service fees

Use the accommodation field for the lodging charge and its taxes. Put any cleaning or other shared charges you want to allocate separately in the fees field. If you only have an all-in receipt and want to use one rule for everything, put it in accommodation and leave fees at zero.

Empty nights

A reserved night still costs money when nobody is there. The nights-stayed method spreads the entire accommodation cost over the group. The night-by-night result is deliberately unavailable if any booking night has no guests: first agree who is responsible instead of quietly dropping that cost.

Couples, children, and different rooms

This calculator treats each row as one equally weighted person. Enter both members of a couple as separate guests. It does not apply child discounts or bedroom-size adjustments. If the group wants different room prices, agree those amounts separately; do not disguise them as extra or missing nights.

Cancellations and money already paid

Changing dates recalculates the proposed split, but does not determine cancellation obligations. Agree on a cutoff before booking. To find a remaining balance, subtract a person’s previous contribution from their final share; the calculator does not track repayments or move money.

Common questions

How do I split an Airbnb when people stay different nights?

Enter the booking dates, accommodation cost, and each guest’s arrival and departure. Compare both methods, decide which matches your group’s agreement, then copy the breakdown. This works for a shared hotel reservation or cabin too.

Why doesn’t check-out count as a night?

A Friday check-in and Monday check-out uses Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights: three nights, not four. Dates are calculated as calendar dates, so daylight-saving changes do not add or remove nights.

What if Saturday is more expensive?

Enable “Use a different price for each night” and enter the lodging charge for each date, including any lodging taxes you want allocated with it. These amounts replace the accommodation-total input. Night-by-night uses each individual price; nights-stayed uses their combined total.

Can I save this and come back later?

Yes. Check “Save this plan on this device” and bookmark this page. Your browser restores the plan here next time. It does not sync to another device and can be cleared by browser settings or private browsing. Download a CSV if you need a separate copy.

Are these payment requests?

No. The output is an expense allocation for discussion. Nothing is charged, transferred, or sent to your guests. Currency selection labels the amounts; it does not convert exchange rates.

Why this tool exists

People organizing trips repeatedly ask how to handle staggered arrivals and changing guest lists. These discussions helped define the problem; the calculations above are explained so you can check them yourself.
